Russia joins COTIF

03-09-2010 12:28

Russia has officially joined the Convention on International Carriage by Rail (COTIF), an initiative which entered into force on February 1, 2010.
This accession applies only in case of several track sections between the maritime terminals in Baltiysk and Ust-Luga and the main Russian network. However, this measure will help consolidate the cooperation between COTIF and the Russian railway authorities and also extend the CIM standard on the Russian network. The use of the single CIM code on the sections in question, in the context of increasing freight traffic on Sassnitz-Baltiysk-Ust-Luga section, will contribute to the sustainable development of transport services on this route. The gauge change will take place in Germany, which simplifies the operations.
RZD may also join COTIF. This will facilitate the adoption, on a large scale, of the CIM and SMGS interoperability standards.

A unique signalling system for Europe

“The long way towards an interoperable railway system”

In the beginning of the '90s, the European railway industry with support from the EU institutions engaged in creating a common railway signalling system. Over time, ETMS emerged as one of the most successful European industrial projects and is now on its way to making railway transport one of the most competitive transport modes.

Although railway transport is, by far, the safest, fastest and lowest CO2-emission mode of transport, it is, however, confronted with one of the most striving problems, that of cross-border traffic which is complex and difficult to manage and most of the times affects the competitiveness of this means of transport. Cross-border traffic is doubled by the differences of gauge, electrification systems, administrative procedures, that make interoperability difficult and increase operation costs.
