EBRD economic analysis on the South-East European region

03-09-2010 16:00

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has published a document entitled “South-East Europe: lessons from the global economic crisis” on the evolution of the financial crisis in South-East Europe and its impact on various sectors.
According to the report, “the impact has been better than many feared and that this resilience can be attributed in large part to the mature and sensible reaction of the region itself”. The document also points to the strong financial support from publicly owned international organisations, and the continued commitment of privately owned foreign companies and banks to the region.
Some of the other sectors analysed in this document concern the industrial production, inflation rate, the drop in exports in the EU, the increase in loans.
The document describes in detail the evolution of the main macroeconomic indicators, highlighting the relative resilience of the region.

A unique signalling system for Europe

“The long way towards an interoperable railway system”

In the beginning of the '90s, the European railway industry with support from the EU institutions engaged in creating a common railway signalling system. Over time, ETMS emerged as one of the most successful European industrial projects and is now on its way to making railway transport one of the most competitive transport modes.

Although railway transport is, by far, the safest, fastest and lowest CO2-emission mode of transport, it is, however, confronted with one of the most striving problems, that of cross-border traffic which is complex and difficult to manage and most of the times affects the competitiveness of this means of transport. Cross-border traffic is doubled by the differences of gauge, electrification systems, administrative procedures, that make interoperability difficult and increase operation costs.
